Conglomerate
Lithogenous sedimentary rock
This sample of conglomerate contains a variety of clasts (cobbles to pebble-sided fragments) imbedded in a sandy mudstone matrix. The clasts consist of beach wave- and stream-worn fragments reworked from various lithologies of Jurassic, Cretaceous, and Teriary age that were eroded from the nearby Coast Ranges of Central California. They accumulated along a shoreline that is now an elevated marine terrace of Late Pleistocene age. This sample came from the shoreline near the south end of the Santa Lucia Range, Monterey County, CA.
